Presented for the first time in Sweden, the series of five lecture-performances by Slavs and Tatars explore our current crisis of modernity through such disparate perspectives as religiosity, language politics and orientalism. Over the course of a weekend, a pickle-juice bar conceived by the artists for the Kulturhuset Stadsteatern serves as a venue for a marathon of lectures. Visitors are invited to consider, with a glass of cabbage or gerkin pickle juice in hand, an alternative understanding of identity, and why we have gone sour on power, be it patriarchal or populist. Slavs and Tatars’ Pickle Politics argue for an accumulation of allegiances, where subjectivity is disrupted, and where home, heart and host coil around one another in a knot, nearly impossible to untie.

Focusing on an area east of the former Berlin Wall and west of the Great Wall of China, Slavs and Tatars’ practice extends over three principal activities: publications, exhibitions, and lecture-performances. The work is informed by a profound transcultural sense of humor and of play combining language games, pop culture and cutting edge research, in other words it re-imagines what it is that art can do.
