WHAT ARE WE LOOKING AT? The images in mondays.cloud are the output of a neural network (often called “Artificial Intelligence”).
The neural network is in this case an existing pre-trained model trained on a dataset of image-and-text pairs of a very large portion of the internet.
It here forms a sort of distilled hive mind that can be probed and manipulated. A statistical reflecting pool, a collective networked and aggregated unconscious, a carnival mirror of petabytes of semi-structured data.
However, the parameters of this neural network have been over-ridden and further trained on single comic strips by the American cartoonist Jim Davis and his Monday-hating cat Garfield.
The result is a descent into an image space haunted by the features of itself. What patterns are there? What patterns do we ourselves extract and what is in turn extracted from us? What images are possible in this new paradigm of infinite variations and what do they mean?
With these questions hanging in the air, ultimately, mondays.cloud is an attempt to capture that elusive yet addictive feeling of the contemporary online. Keep scrolling!

JACOB BROMS ENGBLOM
b. 1986 Nynäshamn, Sweden. Lives and works in Stockholm.
Jacob has an MFA from the Royal Institute of Art (KKH) and a Master of Science in Media Communications from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). His art work has been shown extensively online and in in spaces devoted to art pioneered by technical advances in a digital world.
