ISSUES presents the third solo show at the gallery with painter, sculptor and film-maker Emanuel Röhss.

While for many years the artist’s work drew on Hollywood’s blurring of fiction and reality, we now turn our attention to his interest in time.

Time, and its manifold properties, has been an ongoing focus in Röhss’ practice.

His first show at ISSUES, In Broad Daylight (2018), explored sunlight at particular given moments in time during the summer solstice. His second show, Historical Figures (2023) drew on the parallel timelines of history and fiction.

This exhibition is centered on geological time as it is experienced in the mountains. This interest – catalysed by his recreational practice of alpinism – is interrogated through paintings and sculptures realised in immediate proximity with the environment in question.

Emanuel Röhss (b. Gothenburg 1985) lives and works in Los Angeles. Influenced by the urban landscape of LA, and the wilderness of the American West, Röhss’ work explores the relationship between architectures from historical and contemporary civilizations and their assimilation and affect on cinema and popular culture.

Our perception of time and its manifestations has been a central theme in the artist’s projects. Through an existential interest in mountains, the Earth’s geology, and a recreational practice of alpinism he has honed in on an exploration of our connection with the natural world and deep time.

He received his MFA from the Royal College of Art in London in 2013 and in 2021 he received the Stena Foundation for Science and Culture Art Award with accompanying solo exhibition at the Gothenburg Museum of Art. He works in the mediums of painting, sculpture, film, writing, and installation art, and has in recent years pursued larger scale public commissions. He is currently working on a project for Viskans Park in Borås, west Sweden and commissioned public work can be seen at Östra Masthuggskajen, Gothenburg; Hillenberg restaurant, Stockholm; SEB offices, Stockholm and Kistefoss offices, Oslo.

Solo shows include Historical Figures, ISSUES (2023); Earth Song, Galerie Nordenhake Focus, Stockholm (2022); Belly of the Beast, Gothenburg Museum of Art (2021–22); In Broad Daylight, ISSUES, Stockholm (2018); End Frames, Coma Gallery, Sidney (2017); Invitation to Love, Thomas Duncan Gallery, Los Angeles (2016); Mad Horizon (with John Skoog), Index Art Foundation, Stockholm (2016); The Night Holds Terror, SALTS, Basel (2015) and Soft Jazz, Carl Kostyál, Stockholm (2014).

He has been included in group exhibitions at galleries and institutions such as The Thielska Museum, Stockholm; Sven-Harrys konstmuseum, Stockholm; Kristianstads Konsthall, Kristianstad; Johan Berggren Gallery, Malmö; SIZED, Los Angeles; Epoch Gallery, Los Angeles; Ibid Gallery, Los Angeles; Anonymous Gallery, New York; Museo Nazionale di Capadimonte, Napels; T293, Naples; Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen, Sankt Gallen; Sadie Coles HQ, London; Carl Kostyál, London; South London Gallery, London; Seventeen Gallery, London and Rowing Projects, London.
